摘要:
The seminar aims to provide an overview of complex dynamic phenomena occurring in shells under diverse environmental conditions. It presents the results of an extensive experimental campaign on a polymeric shell subjected to purely random excitation, characterized by a narrow frequency band (almost monochromatic noise). The findings show that Extreme Events can also occur in structural systems. The system under investigation is a circular cylindrical shell, seismically excited from the base along its longitudinal axis. This type of excitation directly forces axisymmetric modes and induces autoparametric excitation of shell-like modes. Under extreme conditions—specifically, high-energy input—the system’s response to the random excitation displays unexpected spikes, which are irregular in both amplitude and temporal distribution. These spikes bear a strong resemblance to phenomena observed in neuronal models, electronic circuits, laser systems, and ocean waves. Consequently, models such as van der Pol, FitzHugh–Nagumo, Morris-Lecar, and Langevin are particularly useful for interpreting the experimental observations. The analysis of the extreme events recorded during the experiments revealed an oscillatory nature of the spikes, with spectral content matching the natural frequencies of the structure and a decay pattern similar to the transient response of free structural oscillations. For this reason, we refer to these events as “ghost hammering”—as if an invisible impact excites the shell and initiates a transient vibration.
